MARITIME | Hong Kong bulker becomes the millionth ship through the Panama Canal

Originally published in Tradewinds, 2010/09/29

Hong Kong’s Fortune Plum has won the distinction of becoming ship transit number 1,000,000 through the Panama Canal.

The 57,000–dwt Cido Shipping bulker (built 2010) made its passage on 4 September with a cargo of steel.

The first ship to pass through the waterway was the SS Ancon, a steamer that helped bring in workers and supplies up to its opening in 1914.

An average of 14,000 ships now use the canal annually.
