PIRATES have seized a Panamanian-flagged general cargo ship off Somalia, EU NAVFOR told Fairplay today.
“The ship’s owner reported to us that it received an automatic distress signal yesterday,” a spokeswoman for the anti-piracy force said.
NATO then sent Danish warship Esbern Snare to find the 20,170dwt ship, owned by Japan’s NYK-Hinode Line. “Finally this morning the captain of Izumi contacted the Esbern Snare and confirmed the ship was under pirate control,” the spokeswoman said, adding that the vessel was about 170 n-miles south of Mogadishu when it was taken.
There are 20 Filipino crew members onboard the seized vessel, EU NAVFOR reported.
