BRAZIL | Itajai deepening dredging funds guaranteed

Funds to be allocated to Itajai Port Complex for deepening dredging of its approach channel and turning circle from 11 to 14 meters have been guaranteed most recently by the Federal Government. The international dredging tender officially opened by the Special Secretariat of Ports was concluded last December 17 th and all government funds to carry out Itajai Port Complex capital dredging have already been homologated by the Federal Government.

Capital dredging works are expected to commence soon and be fully finished by the second quarter of 2011. Participating bidders were dredging companies Camargo Correa S/A, Triunfo Consortium, DTA Consortium, EIT Engineering, Dragabras Dredging Services Ltd., Bandeirantes Dredging and Construction Ltd., Jan De Nul do Brasil Dredging Ltd and Van Oord Maritime Operations and Services Ltd. Jan De Nul do Brasil Dredging Ltd was the lowest bidder and won the U$36.16 million capital dredging contract.

Itajaí Port Complex capital dredging project is included in the National Dredging Program (PND) subsidized by funds from the Brazilian Government’s Growth Acceleration Program (PAC). Itajaí Port Authority Superintendent Antonio Ayres dos Santos points out to the great importance of the capital dredging to allow operations of much larger vessels into the complex. As stated by Ayres, every each centimeter gained in depth will allow an extra 60 tons of cargo loaded per vessel operation.
