FROM bananas and apples to bizarre new mushroom cultures with a taste of almond, Berlin’s Fruit Logistica, the largest fruit trade fair in the world, plays host to both the traditional and the high-tech ends of the business.
But behind the scenes of this year’s industrial market stall a turf war was being fought between containership lines and specialised reefership operators.
The big boys of the container sector including Maersk Line, Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd all rolled into Berlin earlier this month with the intention of using their muscle to win over new customers. But if they thought this was going to be an easy victory, they very quickly realised that they had a fight on their hands. The traditional reefership operators including Seatrade, NYK Cool and Star Reefers were already there defending what they see as their territory, eager to explain that their technology was superior to that of the reefer container.
