DAY OF THE SEAFARER | The Pilot’s Psalm

The Lord is my Pilot, I shall not drift.

He guides me across the dark waters.

He steers me in deep channels.

He keeps my log.

He pilots me by the star of holiness for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I sail ‘mid the fenders and tempests of life I shall dread no danger for He is near me.

His love and care shelter me.

He prepares a harbor before me in the homeland of eternity.

He anoints the waves with oil, my ship rides calmly.

Surely sunlight and starlight shall favor me on my voyages and I will rest in the Port of our Lord forever.

DAY OF THE SEAFARER | Crossing the bar (Alfred Tennyson)

CLIPPER SHIP CROSSING THE BAR OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE OF THE BAY OF SAN FRANCISCO.

CLIPPER SHIP CROSSING THE BAR OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE OF THE BAY OF SAN FRANCISCO

Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross’d the bar.

MARITIME | International Day of the Seafarer recognises maritime workers’ contribution to trade

From the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), 2011.06.23

A global campaign to mark seafarers’ important role in trade and the global economy has been launched in the form of the first ever International Day of the Seafarer on 25 June.

The decision to establish 25 June as International Day of the Seafarer was taken at a diplomatic conference in Manila, Philippines, where milestone revisions to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and its associated code were adopted. Delegates agreed that seafarers’ unique contribution to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole should be marked annually with a “day of the seafarer”. The date chosen, 25 June, was the day on which the amendments to the STCW convention were formally adopted.

The campaign emphasises the fact that shipping is responsible for the carriage of more than 90 per cent of world trade, and that it is the world’s 1.5 million seafarers who help deliver the essential items and commodities on which our lives depend.

An innovative web-based and social media campaign forms the centrepiece of the campaign, which has already garnered support from industry partners, seafarers’ groups and many more.

The initiative takes place against a backdrop of reports that seafarers are facing increasing violence through piracy – according to the shipping industry’s Save Our Seafarers campaign 62 seafarers have died over the past four years as a direct result of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. This has led to a greater emphasis on a worldwide call for government action to tackle the issue.

Canada supports the Day of the Seafarer

Saturday, June 25 is Day of the Seafarer, when the 169 member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrate the unique contribution made by the world’s 1.5 million seafarers.

Some 90 per cent of world trade is carried on the high seas in vessels staffed by seafarers, who risk injury and even death by storm, sinking and piracy. Canada, as the first official member state of the IMO, is proud to support recognition of the seafarer on this special day.

“We owe a great debt to seafarers,” says Donald Roussel, Director General of Transport Canada Marine Safety. “They take chances every day to bring goods and people safely to and from ports around the globe.”

Today’s seafarer comes from one of more than a hundred different nations, two-thirds of them developing countries.

“For most people, most of the time, ships are simply ‘out of sight and out of mind,’ and the same, as a consequence, can be said of seafarers that operate the world’s fleet,” said Mr. Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary-General of the IMO. “This is despite the fact that the global economy depends utterly on their presence.”

For this year’s Day of the Seafarer, the IMO invites everyone to show their support through social networks like FacebookLinkedin and Twitter. Blogger and other social media toolkits are available on the IMO website athttp://www.imo.org/About/Events/Pages/Day-of-the-Seafarer.aspx with the goal of having as many people across the planet offer a personal thank you to seafarers.
